Today we discussed the 8 cultural universals in depth. The discussion ranged from talking about Teslas as a status symbol, to discussing the fact that students talk differently to their parents than they do to their peers. In all cases, we talked about how those things fit into the 8 universals, and how they tell us things about the student's culture.
Every student is a part of multiple cultures. We are all a part of our peer group culture (teen culture in America), our family culture, our country's culture, etc. At each level we make assumptions and build an understanding of the society and culture based on increasingly big generalizations. The closer we get to home, the closer to the individual, the smaller those generalizations become.
Below is my slide deck from the assignment. In the file section there is a cultural universals assignment that is due tomorrow.
