Today we moved on from the cultural universals and students were reminded that as honors students, it's up to them to constantly question why were are studying what we are studying, and to draw connections between the various lessons we cover.
We went from the 8 cultural universals to drawing a map of the world from memory. Students were asked where they started, and why they started there. By and large, people start where they are from - most students started in North America, and North America was their most "accurately drawn" continent. I handed out a blank map of the world (not uploaded to files, as I do not have it electronically - just ask if you need another one), and let students know there will be a QUIZ NEXT FRIDAY on culture, the themes of geography, and this map. Students do not need to know every country, but do need to now the regions we will be studying this year (which are listed on the map). The map will not be collected or graded, it is to be used as a study guide.
After the map discussion, we began talking about the 5 themes of geography, and each theme was explained in greater detail (see slide deck in "class notes.") Lastly, I assigned homework. Students were asked to create a mind map using color and illustration (last slide of slide deck). This is to be done in their notebook.
