Today we finished up Life of Pi.
We had a great conversation about what the island represents - some students felt maybe it represented the dark side of Pi and his devolution into cannibalism in order to survive on the boat. Others believed it to be an allegory to the Garden of Eden. Eventually I shared my own view, that it represents his religion in general - his faith. When he was losing faith, he found the island (his religion) and it gave him comfort and rest - but he could not let himself become completely consumed by it - he had to get back out to the real world - he takes with him the food (or religious lessons - as food for his soul) that he could carry, and continued forth on his journey.
After the discussion, I presented the assignment for today:
Write 1 paragraph. (formal writing, in the writing category)
Focus on ONE theme from the book.
What methods (different from the book) does a producer employ to advance theme?
**Give at least 3 concrete examples from the movie
**Address at least two different methods
The structure should look like this:
sentence 1 - thesis
sentence 2-4/5 - evidence
sentence 6-7 - analysis (so what)
Last sentence - conclusion.
