Today we started out discussing reading as an artist rather than reading just for the sake of getting through something. Reading as an artist means you bring something to the text yourself, you become a part of it and interact with it by using your own imagination to develop a movie in your head as you read through the work. While students did not read this article, here is a link to a 1.5 page article from which my lecture was developed: The Reader as Artist by Toni Morrison. After that, we discussed a variety of poetic devices used to help in pacing and emphasizing specific parts or words in a poem or piece of literature. Finally, we wrapped up with an nice discussion of George Ella Lyon's Where I'm From poem.
Students will be creating their own Where I'm From poem's later in the week. There was no homework and no in-class assignment today. Below is my slide deck from today's presentation. Students were asked to take notes.
